WoO Late Models feature forced to Saturday afternoon; Winger to start up front

Ashton Winger will start from the pole position on Saturday afternoon

***Update: This race has been moved to Wednesday, February 16th as part of the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia due to saturated grounds following last night’s rain***

For the second night in a row at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park, the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series found itself in the position of having its feature race postponed until the next day. On Thursday night/Friday morning it was track conditions combined with the lateness of the hour that forced a change. Then a stubborn rain shower on Friday night that moved in just before feature racing was set to take place brought a halt to the action.

Track and series officials eventually decided to move the features for the DIRTcar 604 Pro Late Models, the Volusia 602 Late Models, and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm. The conclusion of the scheduled Friday program will then lead into Saturday’s portion of the Sunshine Nationals which will offer up racing in those same three classes.

All three of the World of Outlaws-sanctioned races for Super Late Model machines in the three-day Sunshine Nationals event pay a $10,000-to-win purse. Dale McDowell was the winner of the feature that was concluded on Friday afternoon.

For those who can’t attend, the racing action will be shown live by DirtVision.com.

Below is a re-cap of the portion of Friday’s action that was completed before the rain came:

A total of 46 cars were signed in for competition.

Dale McDowell was quickest in Group A qualifying with a lap of 17.298 seconds around the half-mile clay oval topping Ross Robinson, Hudson O’Neal, Daulton Wilson and Brian Shirley.

Ashton Winger topped Group B time-trials after touring the track in 17.575 seconds to better the efforts of Dennis Erb Jr., Darrell Lanigan, Devin Moran and Ricky Thornton Jr.

Dale McDowell claimed the win in the first heat race of the night ahead of Hudson O’Neal, Brian Shirley and Shane Clanton then Ross Robinson bested Brandon Sheppard, Josh Richards and Daulton Wilson in the second preliminary contest.

Ashton Winger took the checkered flag over Darrell Lanigan, Kyle Larson and Jimmy Owens in the third heat while Chris Madden outran Devin Moran, Kyle Strickler and Kyle Bronson in the fourth and final heat.

Logan Martin, Cade Dillard and Tyler Bruening advanced to the main event out of the first Last Chance Showdown just before Max Blair, Dennis Erb Jr. and Morgan Bagley gained entry into the feature out of the second LCS.

The WoO Late Models redraw set the first four rows of the starting grid for the main event as Winger, McDowell, Robinson, Madden, Lanigan, Moran, O’Neal and Sheppard.
