The Lucas oil Late Model Dirt Series is set to conclude its 2021 season with its richest race on the schedule. The 41st annual Dirt Track World Championship will take place at the Portsmouth Raceway Park on Saturday night. Prior to the running of the $100,000-to-win event at the track located in southern Ohio, preliminary action took place on Saturday afternoon following a rainout of those activities on Friday night.
A total of 58 cars were signed in for competition.
Tim McCreadie cliched the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series prior to the start of racing in Portsmouth while Ricky Thornton Jr. has assured himself the Rookie of the Year honors.
Ricky Thornton Jr. was fastest in Group A qualifying with a lap of 15.254 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval besting Spencer Hughes, Kyle Bronson, Tim McCreadie, Shane Clanton, Tanner English, Mason Zeigler, Dennis Erb Jr., Jonathan Davenport and Tyler Erb.
Devin Moran proved to be quickest in Group B time-trials when he toured the track in 15.661 seconds to beat out Chris Ferguson, Scott Bloomquist, Brandon Overton, Brandon Sheppard, Colton Flinner, Earl Pearson Jr., Jimmy Owens, Mike Marlar and Jason Jameson.
Ricky Thornton Jr. earned the right to start the 100-lap main event from the pole position by virtue of his win in the first heat race ahead of Mason Zeigler and Tim McCreadie then Spencer Hughes took the second preliminary over Shane Clanton and Ryan Gustin
Kyle Bronson defeated Tanner English and Jonathan Davenport in the third heat race of the afternoon.
Devin Moran would start the crown jewel feature from the outside of the front as a result of his win in the fourth heat as he bettered Brandon Overton and Jason Jameson while Chris Ferguson took the fifth heat by outperforming Jimmy Owens and Devin Gilpin.
Scott Bloomquist grabbed the checkered flag in the sixth and final heat over Mike Marlar and Hudson O’Neal.
