Josh Richards set for WoO Late Models return with Boom Briggs

Josh Richards

Josh Richards is a four-time World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series champion and leads defending tour champion Brandon Sheppard by one race as the all-time feature winner for that series. And now, the Shinnston, West Virginia driver will return to the WoO Late Model Series to seek another title and even more victories.

This story was initially reported on WorldoOutlaws.com.

It was announced on Thursday that Richards will drive a second car fielded by veteran racer Boom Briggs in 2022 on the series in which he has enjoyed so much success. The 33-year-old driver has competed full-time on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series since 2017.

Richards made two starts in a car provided by Briggs in the ‘Duel in the Desert’ at the dirt track located on the property of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He finished 5th in the Friday night portion of that program then 2nd in the Saturday night finale of the two-day affair.

Richards was the LOLMDS champion in 2017 when he drove for Best Performance Motorsports. He later remained on that tour while steering a car owned by former NASCAR Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer. Now, Richards will come back to the series on which he started while driving for his father, Mark Richards, in the Rocket Chassis house car.

Richards was the WoO champion in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2016.

In 2011 and 2012, Richards gave NASCAR a try as he competed on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 9 races and on the NASCAR Xfinity Series where he made 14 starts.

The “Rocket Man” has won a total of 78 World of Outlaws Late Model Series features including the prestigious USA Nationals at Wisconsin’s Cedar Lake Speedway in 2011 and the Firecracker 100 at Pennsylvania’s Lernerville Speedway in 2013. Richards has also won the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Dirt Track World Championship twice(2018 & 2019) at Portsmouth Raceway Park in Ohio.

Boom Briggs will continue to drive as well with the two-car team employing Rocket Chassis powered by Clements Racing Engines.

Richards, Briggs and the rest of the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series will kick off their 2022 campaign in the Sunshine Nationals on January 20-22 at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida.
