Jimmy Owens claims Southern Nationals checkered flag at Tri-County

Jimmy Owens earned his second win of the 2023 Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals campaign on Thursday night at Tri-County Race Track. With two points-paying races remaining, Owens extended his lead over Carson Ferguson in the standings. The ‘Newport Nightmare’ made a mid-race move to wrest the lead from Donald McIntosh then held back a late charge from Ricky Weiss to secure the victory.

The Rocket Chassis driver from Newport, Tennessee earned $7,553 from the track located in Brasstown, NC in a race aired live by FloRacing.com.

A total of 28 cars were signed in for competition

Feature Re-cap: The 40-lap main event got underway with McIntosh leading Weiss, Collins, Dixon and Ferguson. Owens jumped up to fourth on lap 3 with McDowell coming to fifth one lap later. 

Owens then took third away from Collins on lap 5. At the same time, McIntosh and Weiss were involved in a fierce fight for the lead with Owens closing in on the lead duo.

A lap 9 caution for the slowing car of Chuck Southard. On the restart, Owens moved to second pushing Weiss back to third with McDowell following. The racing was intense among the top-4 until a lap 14 caution for Payne. The order at the time was McIntosh, Owens, Weiss, McDowell, Collins and Ferguson.

Ferguson moved to fifth on the restart but a caution flag waved again on lap 15. Ferguson the passed McDowell for fourth on the restart.

Owens got by McIntosh on lap 17 for the lead of the race. Weiss then moved around McIntosh for second lap 22.

Owens continued to lead as the laps clicked away but had to work through slower traffic. But Weiss would close on Owens over the last couple of circuits. In the end, Owens edged a charging Weiss for his second Southern Nationals win of 2023.
