Chase King, Aaron Guinn earn Volunteer feature victories

As part of its Frostbuster event, the Volunteer Speedway hosted racing action in a number of classes. Among those were the Brucebilt Iron-Man Modifieds and the Sportsman Late Model division. When all was said and done, Chase King left the Bulls Gap, Tenn. facility with the $1,200 for his Modified win while Aaron Guinn took home $700 for taking the checkered flag in the Sportsman class.

Chase King led all the way in the Modified feature

Shon Flanary was fastest in Modified qualifying as he turned in a lap of 13.559 seconds around the 4/10 mile clay oval to beat out Chase King, Clayton Miller, Amos Bunch, Ervin Vance, Billy Palmer, Justin Blevins, Wayne James, Brandon Hutchinson and Robbie Comer.

With only those ten cars signed in for competition, series officials opted to start the main event entirely based on qualifying results.

At the start of the 25-lap feature it was King who used his outside front row starting spot to his advantage taking the early lead over Flanary, Miller, Vance and Bunch. Following a restart brought about by an early caution flag, Palmer took fifth away from Bunch. However, Bunch returned the favor on the fourth circuit.

Miller moved up to challenge Flanary for the runner-up spot on lap five but Flanary held on to the position. The loss of momentum from his attempted pass sent Miller back into the clutches of Vance, who took third on the sixth lap.

The fourth running car driven by Miller pulled off track on lap 8 with mechanical issues. Soon after Miller’s retirement, James began to move forward as he grabbed fourth around Palmer with an outside move on lap 11.

By lap 12 King had built a lead of a straightaway with Flanary serving as his closest pursuer. King would continue to lengthen his advantage until he sailed under the checkered flag ahead of Flanary, Vance, Bunch and Palmer.

Aaron Guinn scored the win in the Sportsman division

Zach Sise was quickest in Sportsman qualifying as he toured the high-banked speedway in 13.032 seconds to beat out Aaron Guinn, Brad Seagle, Brandon Miller, Josh Dietz, Jed Emert, Mark Leach, Zack Shannon, Heath Alvey and Jonathan Sims.

Guinn bolted to the lead at the start of the 25-lap feature with Sise, Seagle, Miller and Dietz falling in behind the front runner. Shannon moved around Dietz to take fifth on the second lap while Sise moved in to challenge Guinn for the top spot on lap 4.

Dietz regained the fifth position back from Shannon on lap 5 but his fortunes would turn on lap 9 when he pulled into the pit area with mechanical issues. Meanwhile, Guinn and Sise continued their fight for the lead as they worked through slower traffic until a lap 13 caution slowed the pace.

On the ensuing restart, Emert began to charge forward as he went to the high side and grabbed sixth by passing both Miller and Leach.

Over the final ten circuits, Sise would continue to harass Guinn for the lead but the No. 97 machine eventually lead the field to the checkered flag to collect the victory over Sise, Seagle, Emert and Miller.
