We at InsideDirtRacing.com recognize the contributions made to the sport of dirt racing by those who race in the support classes each week at our local tracks. Their work, dedication and sacrifice are just as great as those who compete in the Late Model divisions. As a result, we hope to shine a spotlight on one of those unsung heroes each week of this season by having them answer eight questions as well as provide other information.
This week’s driver is Brad Davis
Brad Davis is one of the top competitors in the Modified Street division at the Tazewell Speedway, and he enjoys that fact very much.
“In this Modified Street, you can’t put your money on any driver,” Davis said. “You never know who’s going to win among these guys. It’s up in the air. And one thing I love about this class is that you may argue with one of them one week and the next week that same guy is helping you fix your car.
“I don’t look at us as a support class, I look at us as the feature,” the 45 year old Tazewell resident added.
Davis works in the boating industry building boat trailers, hoists and docks. Also, he and his wife recently opened a business that rents inflatable play houses for children’s parties.
1. How long have you been in racing?
“I started racing around 1996, but I quit in ’98. I didn’t know what I was doing and I ended up moving away. In 2001, I moved back and built me another car and we started going pretty regular. That’s when I started racing full time was in 2001.
2. Why the Modified Street class?
“It’s the best racing, no matter where you go.”
3. The best thing about being a race car driver is____.
“When the kids line up on that fence and you see them standing there giving you a thumbs up or you see someone in town and they start talking to you about your car, that’s what it’s all about.”
4. Your best moment in racing came when ____.
“My best friend got killed and we buried him on a Thursday. I wasn’t going to race on that Saturday, but some people talked me into it. I was running behind Gary Blanken and I was giving it all I had. Then a caution came out with four laps to go, and for whatever reason, smoke started boiling out from under his car and he ended up having to pull in. We ended up winning that race.”
5. My biggest dream in racing would be _____.
“I’d say my biggest dream is to get a ride and not have to foot the bill for everything myself. And I just want to go out on top.”
6. What other racer do you admire?
“I have respect for all these drivers who put on a helmet and get out there in these lower classes, especially them that go by the rules.”
7. What’s your favorite thing to do away from the track?
“Spend time with my wife and my five year old daughter.”
8. If I wasn’t racing I would be ____.
“I’d be fishing in tournaments. My wife told me that I couldn’t afford to do both, so I decided to go racing.”
