What’s better than picking up a big Super Late Model win on a Saturday afternoon? Well, how about adding a Crate Late Model win to it? Cory Hedgecock won the $7151-to-win Southern Nationals Bonus Series race on Saturday at 411 Motor Speedway then he added a victory in the Crate Late Model feature later in the day on the Mitch and Tanya McCarter owned facility located in Seymour, Tenn.
The starting lineup for the feature race in this class was set entirely through qualifying. Jimmy Elliott earned the pole position for the main event after he turned a lap of 14.483 seconds around the newly resurfaced 3/8 mile clay oval. Rounding out the top-10 starting positions was Eddie King, Jr., Greg Huskey, Cory Hedgecock, Matt Henderson, Josh Fields, Dustin Golden, Anthony White, Devin Steuart and Logan Roberson.
Elliott led the way early at the start of the 30-lap feature with King, Hedgecock, Huskey and Fields on his rear spoiler. Jason Welshan, who started outside the top-10, made a big early move as he was challenging Fields for fourth by lap 4. At the same time, Henderson went to work on Huskey for the sixth spot just behind the fight for fourth.
The second caution flag of the race flew on lap 10 and it proved to be a pivotal moment in the contest. The lead car of Elliott spun in turn 4 leaving the second running King with no where to go. The two machines made significant contact, damaging Elliott enough that he retired tot he pit area. King, however, was allowed to take his spot at the front of the pack before the green flag waved again.
Just after the ensuing restart, the second running Hedgecock began applying heavy pressure to the rear of the damaged King car. Finally, the lead of the race changed hands on lap 14 when the No. 23 went to the lead. King would eventually bring out a caution on lap 17 when his car stopped on track.
Once in the lead, Hedgecock took control of the proceedings as he got away from the field. Two cars moving forward during the closing laps were those of Jason Manley and White as they engaged in a tight battle for the fourth position. But in the end, it was Hedgecock who would drive under the checkered flag first after he made his way through slower traffic in the final laps. Welshan, Huskey, White, Manley, Fields, Henderson and Roberson came home behind the eventual winner.
In other racing action, Brandon Hutchinson beat out Eddie Stewart and Dean Travis to capture the Street Stock feature.
Derek Duggan was declared the winner of the Mini Stock event when Chuck McMahan refused a post-race inspection. James Ramey and Rocky McNabb were second and third in that race.
Heath Alvey took advantage of a last lap spin by Bradley Lewelling to earn a victory in the Sportsman feature. Wayne Rader and Clyde Stanton followed the winner.
