Weekly Racing Heroes will be a regular feature on InsideDirtRacing.com throughout the 2019 racing season. These pieces will focus on drivers in east Tennessee who race on a weekly basis at the tracks of this region. Here, drivers will answer three questions that will provide fans with a look into the lives of their favorite weekly competitors.
Driver: Mike Weeks
Hometown: Lenoir City, TN
Class: Limited Late Model
For fans who have been in the east Tennessee area for several years Mike Weeks is one of the most recognizable names in the sport of dirt racing. The 42-year-old has won races all over the region in various classes. Now he serves as not only a driver for the Kennedy family but also as somewhat of a mentor for Drew Kennedy.
What got you started in racing?
“My dad raced for years with different drivers and I was fortunate enough that when I got older he let me drive. I’ve just been around it my whole life and I don’t know nothing different. I’ve been blessed to have been around racing like I have and to have been around the people I’ve been surrounded by. My dad paved the way for me to do this and I couldn’t have done none of it without him.”
What is the goal you want to achieve in racing?
“I’m getting older these days but I’d still like to run something like the Southern All-Stars Series or something just to see if I could still try to win a championship or just win as many races as I can. And I’m trying to help Drew progress in his racing. That’s what I want to do because I see a lot of me in him when I was younger.”
What keeps you coming back week after week?
“Oh man, I don’t know. I ask myself that all the time. I just love this sport. Me and Jason Trammell were talking the other day about how we just grew up around it. It’s in our blood. I couldn’t go out and find another job, I mean I could, but I’ve never done nothing else so it would be just like starting all over again.”
