Weekly Racing Heroes will be a regular feature on InsideDirtRacing.com throughout the 2019 racing season. These pieces will focus on drivers in east Tennessee who race on a weekly basis at the tracks of this region. Here, drivers will answer three questions that will provide fans with a look into the lives of their favorite weekly competitors.
Driver: Billy Palmer
Hometown: Knoxville, TN
Class: Modified
Billy Palmer has been a fixture around the east Tennessee racing scene since the 1990’s and he has driven in the Open Wheel Modified class since 1999. The 67-year-old driver still enjoys the sport and he enjoys the people it has brought him closer to.
What got you started in racing?
“We worked with the program over at Warrior building their first car. I went over and finished up the cars and helped build them then I drove the house car for about five years.”
What is the goal you want to achieve in racing?
“I don’t have a real goal. We’ve probably won 300 races so now it’s just having fun. I’m sort of like Red Farmer, I’m just in it for the fun.”
What keeps you coming back week after week?
“It’s just the enjoyment. You know so many people through racing. I don’t hunt and I don’t fish and I’m too old to chase women so I might as well race.”
