Weekly Racing Heroes will be a regular feature on InsideDirtRacing.com throughout the 2019 racing season. These pieces will focus on drivers in east Tennessee who race on a weekly basis at the tracks of this region. Here, drivers will answer three questions that will provide fans with a look into the lives of their favorite weekly competitors.
For several years Adam Engel was fixture at 411 Motor Speedway and other tracks around the east Tennessee region. Now, after a brief hiatus, the 24-year-old driver has returned and is already winning features in the Classics division driving for Patrick Evans. Engel attributes his ability to race to his grandfather John Buckner and his mother Cindy Buckner Engel.

What got you started in racing?
“It’s a long story, but to make it short, my granddad used to race back in the Atomic days. I grew up with my mom and dad racing go-karts and stuff. My mom raced cars back when she was my age and it’s just been something that has stuck with me ever since I was a freshman in high school. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and my granddad has helped me a lot along the way. I can’t thank him enough.”
What is the goal you want to achieve in racing?
“It’s hard to really say a goal when you’re racing. I don’t like to have a lot of enemies. I like to be liked by everybody, but you ain’t going to make everybody happy racing. I like to try to help people where I can. I just want to be known as being a good one.”
What keeps you coming back week after week?
“I just can’t get enough. I keep saying I’m done but here I am again two years later.”
