The American Modified Series made a two race swing through Tennessee over the weekend and Trent Young of Hopkinsville, KY found the journey into the Volunteer State to be a lucrative one as he scored a $2,000 victory at the Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap on Friday evening then followed that up with a $3,000 triumph at the Tazewell Speedway on Saturday night.
Shon Flanary was the fast qualifier on Friday night in Bulls Gap when he bested the field of 31 cars in time-trials by posting a lap of 14.060 seconds around the 4/10 mile oval. Mark Lamont won the first heat of the night while Cameron Marlar took the checkered flag in the second heat. Matt Cooper won the third heat race then Nick Stroupe won the final preliminary race of the night.
Cooper led the way early on at Volunteer but his car faltered due to mechanical issues prior to the tenth circuit. Lamont then went to the lead with Nick Stroupe, Don Adams, Josh Harris and Young in pursuit. Young then began to make his move on lap 15 when he shot around both Harris and Adams to move himself into the third position. One lap later he moved by Stroupe to claim the runner-up spot. Finally, Young passed Lamont on lap 21 to take the lead.
From that point at Volunteer on Friday night, Young maintained the lead and went on to take the checkered flag ahead of Harris, Lamont, Lucas Lee and Adams.
There would be no need for Young to work his way up to the lead on the high banks of the Tazewell Speedway on Saturday night as the No. 10y machine would take the green flag as the leader and never look back.
Local hero Brad Hall led the way in qualifying as he posted a lap of 13.046 seconds around the third-mile facility. Young, Harris, David Stremme and Cooper won their respective heat races at ‘The Bad Fast Taz’.
Young immediately went to the lead of the 40-lap feature with Stremme keeping close tabs on him in the race’s early stages. However, Harris proved to be a nemesis for Stremme in the middle stages of the race as he almost constantly challenged the former NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor for the runner-up position. All the while, Young pulled away to a relatively comfortable advantage as he worked through slower traffic. Cooper, Adams, Hall and Flanary staged a fierce battle for positions within the top-5 over the closing laps of the event.
Ultimately, Young pulled off his second win of the weekend ahead of Stremme, Cooper, Adams, Hall, Harris and Flanary.
