Aside from the Super Late Models, Boyd’s Speedway hosted competition among Crate Late Models, A-Hobby, B-Hobby and Pony divisions as part of the traditional Cabin Fever event on Saturday. Living up to its name, the event attracted over 140 racers who appeared to be ready to get out of their garages and onto a race track.
Todd Morrow led the way in Crate Late Model qualifying when he set a fast time of 15.408 seconds among the 42 cars to post a time-trial speed around the third-mile clay oval during the daylight hours of Saturday afternoon. He was closely followed Travman McCoy, Bobby Richey, Jr, Jason Welshan, Ahnna Parkhurst and Jay Brinkley. In all, the top-12 qualifiers were locked into the feature race.
Trent Low and Ethan Hunter won the two heat races used to set the lineup for the cars that would assemble behind those locked in via time-trials.
At the drop of the green flag in the 30-lap feature, Morrow looked dominant as his #8 machine jumped to the early lead and sailed away from the pack. However, the leader began to experience some difficulty when he caught the tail of the field on the eighth circuit.
Morrow swung wide through turns one and two in an effort to get around the slower cars. That, in turn, opened the door for the second running Richey to close right to the rear spoiler of Morrow. On lap 12, the two leaders put a slower machine in a sandwich as one went high and the other low around the other car. When they exited turn four, the cars became tangled. As a result, the caution flag flew for the only time during the race.
Both leaders suffered minor damage but were placed back in their positions by track officials.
Once the green flag waved again, Morrow re-established himself himself as the front runner while Richey had to hold back the advances of McCoy and Welshan throughout the remainder of the race.
At the finish, it was Todd Morrow collecting the $1,000 victory with Bobby Richey, Jr., Travman McCoy, Jason Welshan, John Owenby, Jay Brinkley, Jerry Coffman, Ethan Hunter and Tanner Works following him to the checkered flag.
Booger Brooks and Beau Bice have proven to be two of the top A-Hobby class drivers in the area and they once again proved their dominance by winning their respective heat races and claiming front row starting spots for the feature race in that division.
A total of 25 cars were on hand to race in this class on Saturday.
At the start of the feature, Bice jumped to the early lead from his inside front row starting position with Brooks right in his tire tracks. Several early cautions did not allow for the race to get into any sort of rhythm from the outset.
Brooks was able to get around Bice for the lead on one of those early restarts. However, Bice returned the favor by making a strong move to the inside in turn one on a following green flag, but his move was negated when the yellow flag flew once again before the lap could be completed.
At the finish, Booger Brooks scored the $400 win over Beau Bice, Josh Beagan, Kenny Taylor and Brandon Stanfield.
Michael Brooks won the lone heat race for the nine car field of B-Hobby drivers to earn the pole for the main event in that division.
Brooks faced a strong early challenge in the feature from Ricky Wagner. The two cars came in contact with each other in turn one sending Brooks spinning and doing damage to the nose of Wagner’s machine.
Brooks was restored to the lead by track officials while Wagner was sent to the rear of the pack. From that point, Brooks drove away to a dominant victory while Wagner was forced to work his way back to the front.
At the finish, it was Michael Brooks taking the $300 win with Ricky Wagner, Richard Dixon and Boonie Gullet trailing.
Michael Courtney was almost untouchable last season in the Mini Stock/Pony class races around the region and that looks as if it might be the case again in 2015. He and Nick Perry won their respective heat races to place themselves on the front row for the feature in that class.
Courtney went immediately to the lead and drove away to a $200 victory over EJ Baylie.
