Tazewell Speedway set to kick off 52nd season with Trammell Memorial

The hills of Cave Springs will roar alive once again as Tazewell Speedway kicks off it’s 52nd season of racing this Saturday night April 1st with the 8th Annual Charles Trammell Memorial. Limited Late Models teams from around the region will gather to compete for $2000 to win in the feature race honoring the patriarch of the Trammell racing family.

 

Charles Trammell competed at Tazewell in the early days of the track and was inducted into the inaugural class of the Tazewell Speedway Hall of Fame. In the 70’s his son Jack took over the driving duties capturing numerous wins at Tazewell Speedway and other tracks in the region.

 

Charles’ grandson Jason has carried on the Trammell racing tradition winning dozens of races at Tazewell Speedway along with Super Late Model and Tazewell Late Model championships. Charles Trammell passed away in November of 2009 and the following season Tazewell Speedway track owner Gary Hall created the race in his honor.

 

Jason Trammell has won the last two season openers. Other past winners include: 2014-Cory Hedgecock, 2013-Chris Madden, 2012-Steve Smith, 2011-Vic Hill, 2010-Billy Ogle Jr. Along with the season opener Trammell captured seven more victories at Tazewell Speedway last year and was crowned the points champion.

 

Sportsman Late Models will also be in action racing for $700 to win, Michael Boyd of Morristown was last year’s winner of the event. 2016 Points Champion Jonathan Miracle scored four wins last year with his teammate Clyde Overholt capturing six wins. The Sportsman division would see six different winners last season.

 

Super Stocks will also compete for $700 to win in their feature. Eddie Stewart of Manchester, KY won last year’s event. By the end of the season the division would see nine different winners with Brad Davis of Tazewell awarded the points championship, scoring four wins along the way.

Classic Cars will also be in action, John Stevens of Wallins Creek, KY dominated the division last year with eleven wins.

 

4 Cylinders will be on the card for the first race of the season, eight different drivers found Victory Lane last season in the division. Chuck McMahan of Dandridge led the class with five wins in route to the Points Championship.

 

Pit gates will swing open at 4:00. Main grandstands open at 4:30. Drivers meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00 with Hot Laps starting at 7:30.

 

General admission is $15 with kids nine and under admitted free. Pit admission will be $30.
