Tazewell Speedway general manager Chris Corum announced at Saturday’s season opener the track will return to a weekly racing schedule beginning in May. The track was originally scheduled to run their normal group of special events and up to ten points races. After discussions with racers and fans, the decision was made to go back to a weekly schedule from May through September.
“We had an overwhelming amount of support from drivers and fans,” Corum explained via text message. “The combination of marquee national events and the support of local fans for a weekly schedule makes a perfect scenario.”
Part of the initial decision to cut back on the 2017 schedule was based, in part, on Corum taking over the role of general manager. With speedway owner Gary Hall sidelined most of this season recovering from back surgery, Hall did not want to overwhelm Corum with a full schedule. Corum said he and his family are ready for the challenge.
“It’s a big commitment of time and effort,” Corum said of the expanded schedule. “Me and my family as well as Gary and Shirlene just had to make that commitment. This place is awesome and there is nowhere else that I’d rather be.”
The remaining dates for the Tazewell Speedway schedule will be announced in the coming days.
