We at InsideDirtRacing.com recognize the contributions made to the sport of dirt racing by those who race in the support classes each week at our local tracks. Their work, dedication and sacrifice are just as great as those who compete in the Late Model divisions. As a result, we hope to shine a spotlight on one of those unsung heroes each week of this season by having them answer eight questions as well as provide other information.
This week’s driver is Tyler James
The modified division is one support class that has had trouble taking hold on the dirt tracks of east Tennessee. But that isn’t keeping Tyler James of White Pine, Tenn. from living his dream of driving in the open wheel ranks.
“Since there aren’t many tracks around here looking to run modifieds, we may end up going to Ponderosa or following along with that American Modified Series,” the 21-year-old said. “Modifieds are all I’ve ever run.”
1. How long have you been in racing?
“This will make my fifth year. I’ve run at 411, Bulls Gap, Smoky Mountain, and Tazewell.”
2. Why the Modified class?
“Dad just had a car that needed a motor in it and that’s when they first started that open wheel class at 411. That’s just what I started racing in and I haven’t thought about switching.”
3. The best thing about being a race car driver is____.
“The adreniline rush you get while you’re out there. There’s nothing like it. I’d do it every night if I could.”
4. Your best moment in racing came when ____.
“The two wins(2012) I had over at the Gap. The first one, I got to pass my dad(Wayne James) for the win. In the second one, I got kind of lucky when Mack McCarter’s fuel line came off and I ended up winning. And I made it into one of the modified series races they had over at Smoky Mountain.”
5. My biggest dream in racing would be _____.
“I’d like to be able to travel around like Jimmy(Owens) does and get to race in all those races. I wouldn’t have to make it up with the big dogs. I’d just like to travel around and enjoy racing.”
6. What other racer do you admire?
“My dad and my papaw. And I always liked watching Scott Sexton and I watched Duayne Hommel when I was younger.”
7. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re away from the track?
“Sit around and do nothing.”
8. If I wasn’t racing I would be ____.
“Taking care of my little girl(Mackenzie) and working.”
