We at InsideDirtRacing.com recognize the contributions made to the sport of dirt racing by those who race in the support classes each week at our local tracks. Their work, dedication and sacrifice are just as great as those who compete in the Late Model divisions. As a result, we hope to shine a spotlight on one of those unsung heroes each week of this season by having them answer eight questions as well as provide other information.
This week’s driver is Tony Wilson

Tony Wilson may be 54 years old but he is new to the racing game, at least from the driving standpoint. But an accident several years ago and the nearly two years of recovery time caused the driver to pursue his dreams.
“Building the car became a therapy project,” the Crossville resident declared. But racing has become even more. After the loss of his wife, Wilson has found solace in this sport he has grown to love.
After racing at the Wartburg Speedway last year, Wilson plans to step out a bit more in 2014. “We’re going to bounce around a little bit,” he said. “We’ll race in Street Stocks at Crossville and some in the Thunder & Lightning at 411.”
1. How long have you been in racing?
“Last year at Wartburg was my first time in a car, but I’ve been around it in one way or another for some time.”
2. Why the Thunder & Lightning/Street Stock class?
“Last year it was for the price. It was the lowest budget we could get into. This year, we just ran into a deal on the car. I went almost to Washington, DC to pick it up. It’s an old asphalt car that’s been modified and she’s heavy, but it seems like it’s going to do pretty good.”
3. The best thing about being a race car driver is____.
“I think just the competition and the thrill of it. It gets the old heart going.”
4. Your best moment in racing came when ____.
“The other night when I was sitting in the car waiting, a little boy came down next to the fence and waved and I saw that big grin on his face when I waved back.”
5. My biggest dream in racing would be _____.
“I’d just love to climb into somebody’s car that you know is a competitive car and see what it feels like.”
6. What other racer do you admire?
“I’d say ole Alan Kulwicki for doing it his way.”
7. What’s your favorite thing to do away from the track?
“Getting the car ready to go back. We go up in the mountains and play in a Jeep once in while, but I just love getting my car ready.”
8. If I wasn’t racing I would be ____.
“I’d say bummed out and getting old.”
