Support Class Spotlight: David Kerr

We at InsideDirtRacing.com recognize the contributions made to the sport of dirt racing by those who race in the support classes each week at our local tracks. Their work, dedication and sacrifice are just as great as those who compete in the Late Model divisions. As a result, we hope to shine a spotlight on one of those unsung heroes each week of this season by having them answer eight questions as well as provide other information.

This week’s driver is David Kerr

David Kerr hasn’t necessarily been racing long in full bodied race cars, but he is already making an impact at 411 Motor Speedway and other tracks. The 17-year-old senior at Carter High School in Knoxville has competed in the Thunder & Lightning class. But with that division in jeopardy of being phased out, he is looking to make a move.

Although Kerr has played baseball and basketball in the past, it is racing that now has his full attention.

“We did have a Thunder & Lightning but we’ve got a Sportsman car now,” Kerr explained. “We’re going to run at places like 411 and Bulls Gap. We might run it as a Sportsman car or even as a Crate Late Model. We haven’t decided yet.”

1. How long have you been in racing?

“I’ve been racing for four years. I started out in go-karts and last year was my first full year in the bigger cars.”

2. Why the Thunder & Lightning class?

“Thunder & Lightning was probably the best class at the time we got started. There was a lot of excitement and you could spend less money and still run up front. But since there aren’t many cars there anymore, I want to move up into another class where I can run against more cars and get more experience.”

3. The best thing about being a race car driver is____.

“All the fans. You’ve got all the support from them and everybody cheering you on gets the adrenaline pumping.”

4. Your best moment in racing came when ____.

“My first win earlier this year at 411.”

5. My biggest dream in racing would be _____.

“I’d like to move up to NASCAR and drive for a living there someday.”

6. What other racer do you admire?

“David Miley. I’m dating his daughter so I see him all the time. He helped me build my race car. Plus, he and my dad go way back.”

7. What’s your favorite thing to do away from the track?

“Work on the race car and get it ready for the next week. It takes about all week to get these things ready to race.”

8. If I wasn’t racing I would be ____.

“I’d probably still be playing sports and going to watch racing from the stands.”
