The Iron-Man Championship Series took to the track at 411 Motor Speedway on Saturday night to contest the Leftover event for Super Late Model machines. At the end of an attrition filled feature race it was Scott James who endured to come away from the Seymour, TN track with a $5,000 payday.
A total of 44 Super Late Models entered the event that ran in front of a crowded grandstand.
Hometown driver Ryan King led the way in Group A qualifying with a lap of 13.183 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval. That effort locked him into the feature and earned him the pole position for the main event. Victor Lee also secured a starting spot in the feature via time trials.
Michael Chilton was fastest in Group B qualifying and overall with a time of 13.017 seconds. That beat out Scott James but both drivers made their way into the feature.
Jackie Boggs beat out Chris Garnes, Ray Cook and Will Harris in the first B-main of the night while Donald McIntosh bested Jordon Horton, Patrick Duggan and Charlie Jude in the second preliminary.
Jason Welshan won the third B-main by topping Chicky Barton, Will Roland and Bobby Giffin just before David Crabtree took the fourth and final B-main over Todd Coffman, John Ownbey and Johnny Cloer.
At the start of the 50-lap feature Chilton drove to the early lead with King, James, McIntosh and Lee trailing. Almost immediately trouble began to eliminate one top contender after another. On lap 4 James swept by King to take second with McIntosh attempting to follow him through. King spun while contesting the third spot with McIntosh.
Mcintosh, who was driving for his former Blount Motorsports team, worked his way into second by lap 12 and looked to challenge Chilton’s supremacy. At the same time, Lee and James fought over the third position just behind the lead duo.
However, McIntosh’s time at the front of the field would be short lived as he pulled to the infield with mechanical issues on a lap 15 restart. Lee and Crabtree also suffered damage as they were unable to avoid the slowing McIntosh.
James then began to harass Chilton for the race lead as the event was plagued by multiple caution flags. Chilton continued to hold the off James until lap 31 when he pulled off the track and retired from the race with mechanical troubles.
With a number of cars sidelined from the attrition, the race settled into a rhythm with James leading and Garnes trailing him closely. Further back, Barton, Boggs and Lee ran in tight formation as they contested positions 3-5.
In the end, however, it would be James who sailed under the checkered flag to collect the victory.
