The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series(South) dropped into the Boyd’s Speedway on Saturday afternoon to contest the Cabin Fever event that had been postponed due to weather one week ago. At the end of the night, it was Sam Seawright who claimed the win at the Ringgold, Georgia track. The Black Diamond Race Cars driver from Fort Payne, Alabama earned $5,000 for his efforts in a race aired live by FloRacing.com.
A total of 20 cars were signed in for competition.
John Ownbey was fastest in Group A qualifying with a time of 15.372 seconds around the third-mile clay oval to beat out Robby Mason, Tim Thornton, Matt Steward and Bill Mahan.
Brandon Williams was quickest in Group B time-trials with an effort of 15.153 seconds topping Sam Seawright, Ronnie Johnson, Tod Hernandez and Dillon Crum.
No heat races were contested.
Williams led during the early laps with a hornet’s nest of activity behind him as Seawright, Ownbey, Mason, Johnson and Hernandez among those involved in the battle. Seawright closed in on the leader as he looked to improve his position by one spot as the race approached the halfway mark.
Seawright moved by Williams to take over the top spot on lap 18 just before a caution was displayed to the field one circuit later.
Ownbey and Mason each passed by Williams and took turns challenging Seawright until each had trouble. Ownbey pulled off the track near the halfway point then Mason spun after losing a wheel with seven laps remaining.
Seawright maintained his advantage over the closing laps as Johnson rose to the runner-up position. It was Seawright’s first career Iron-Man Late Model Series victory.
“I can’t say enough about how great the car was,” Seawright said in his victory lane interview. “We’ve been struggling lately and Michael Page came on board with us and he’s got this thing dialed in. I was just out there holding the wheel. I paced myself pretty good in the first couple of laps because I knew the car was so good that I would be there at the end.”
