Randy Weaver fights off challengers for Cabin Fever win at Boyd’s

Randy Weaver fought off challenges at the beginning and the end

Boyd’s Speedway played host to its annual Cabin Fever event on Saturday with Super Late Model machines serving as the primary division at the Ringgold, GA facility. Randy Weaver came away the winner in an event contested under the watchful eye of the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series. The Crossville, TN driver collected $4,000 for his efforts after leading all the way despite a late challenge.

The most pivotal moments of the race came at the very beginning and the very end.

Christian Hanger was fastest in Group A qualifying with a lap of 14.923 seconds around the third-mile clay oval to beat out Donald McIntosh and Booger Brooks.

Randy Weaver turned the fastest lap in Group b time-trials as he toured the circuit in 14.857 seconds to top Cory Hedgecock and Josh Rice.

The top-3 from each qualifying group were locked into the feature.

Sam Seawright beat Derek Ellis, Pierce McCarter, and David Seibers to the finish line in the first heat race while Todd Morrow topped Blake Craft, Colton Profitt, and Chris Jones in the second preliminary.

Josh Rice won out in the third heat over Matt Henderson, Garrett Smith, and Shun Thomas just before Ahnna Parkhurst took the fourth and final heat by besting Robby Mason, Dalton Cook, and Mark Page.

At the start of the 40-lap feature the pole sitter found trouble immediately. As Hanger and Weaver battled for the lead exiting turn two, the No. 29 car spun in a single-car incident. As a result, Hanger then found himself having to restart at the rear of the field.

When the green flag waved again, Weaver went to the lead with McIntosh, Ownbey, Brooks, and Seawright in his tire tracks.

The running order remained much the same over the course of the race with the exception of Seawright getting by Brooks for fourth on a lap 20 restart. Seemingly, each time the leaders would close in on slower traffic, a caution would offer a reprieve.

However, the second half of the feature ran largely caution free which did bring slower traffic into play. As a result, McIntosh was able to close in on the leader.

On the last lap, Weaver found himself boxed in behind two slower cars. McIntosh made a move to the outside and actually drew alongside. But Weaver found an opening on the low side and beat McIntosh to the checkered flag.

Feature Finish: 1. Randy Weaver, 2. Donald McIntosh, 3. John Ownbey, 4. Sam Seawright, 5. Booger Brooks, 6. Cory Hedgecock, 7. Todd Morrow, 8. Blake Craft, 9. Derek Ellis, 10. Pierce McCarter, 11.
