With the recent announcement by Tennessee governor Bill Lee that there would be no extension of the measures that have shut down a number of businesses throughout the Volunteer State for the past several weeks, the opportunity has been presented for race tracks in the region to swing into action. The current “safe at home” policy expires on April 30.
It appears as if one of the first tracks to open its gates will be 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, TN. The Mitch and Tanya McCarter-owned facility plans to contest a $2,500-to-win Topless Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series event on Saturday, May 2nd.
Support classes for that event have yet to be named.
An alliance of east Tennessee tracks that includes 411 Motor Speedway, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Tazewell Speedway and Volunteer Speedway has published a revised schedule of events which shows that weekly racing will take place at Tazewell(TN) Speedway and Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN the following weekend(May 9).
Wartburg(TN) Speedway has a $2,000-to-win American Crate All-Star Series slated for May 9 as well.
The newly renovated Mountain View Raceway in Spring City, TN plans to host the Topless Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series in a $2,500-to-win show on May 9.
I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, TN has stated on its Facebook page that it hopes to open for the 2020 season as soon as possible but would like to get in at least one practice session before doing so.
Obviously, social distancing regulations placed by either the state or the tracks themselves to limit the spread of the coronavirus may be encouraged or mandated during these events.
It appears as if the roar of racing engines will be heard in the Tennessee valley in the very near future.
*Update: 411 Motor Speedway did not receive clearance from local officials for the Topless Late Model race slated for May 2nd.
