The 2015 season is winding down. This edition of the Quick Six blog looks ahead to the future of racing in our area while looking back at some observations from this season. Positive changes are needed to keep the sport strong. Here are some ideas.
- It is time for the area’s track owners/promoters to all have a meeting to come up with some common rules, especially on classes such as four cylinders and street stocks. No one wants to build a car with rules specific to one track.
- Tracks wondering why attendance is suffering should look at their racing program. Any track running 3 or 4 late model classes in one night is not drawing fans. The average fan wants to see cars they see on the street.
- Costs need to be addressed. Classes spending over 10 grand just on engines for races that only pay a few hunder dollars to win is insane. Drivers will not police themselves on costs. One idea is to have a street stock class with a crate engine and phase out the expensive engines.
- Starter classes with low costs need to be started to encourage more young racers to get into the sport. Be patient and let these classes develop.
- Contrary to popular belief, racing does take place in other parts of the country. Tracks in the Midwest have some good ideas on promotions and classes.
- Contrary to the belief of the Tazewell Speedway announcer, there are TWO people that own and work on the Inside Dirt Racing site. But the plug last Sunday was appreciated even if you left one of us out.
