Another Saturday night of slam-bang action under the lights of Wartburg Speedway is in the books, and there was plenty of excitement to go around for the loyal fans who make the pilgrimage every Saturday night at the dirt bull-ring known in the area as “The ‘Burg”.
The front row of the Pony Stock race was under a “Frost Advisory” as father Brian Frost and son Bradley Frost led the field to the green flag. Brian led the first ten circuits before Bradley managed to take away the top spot and earn Frost family bragging rights for the night. Brian Frost had to settle for second with Jeff Wallace in third place. Taylon Overton was fourth with Kenny Lemons and Austin Pugh rounding out the field.
In the Sportsman division, Brad Adkisson and Jaylon Shannon led the field to the green flag, but Adkisson would be the one going back-to-back for victory with the wire-to-wire win. Brian Hooks outdueled Jaylon Shannon for second place. Calvin Brown finished in fourth with Ted Lowe rounding out the field. Bo Willis and Darrick Dugger rounded out the field.
Numbers were down in the Wartburg Late Model class with some notable local stars like Drew Kennedy and Anthony White competing in the United Crate Racing Association event at Smoky Mountain Raceway. However, that didn’t stop the seven cars who showed up from putting on an exciting show. Chris Marcum took fast time honors with a strong 13.006 lap as son Caleb was just a shade behind him to share front row honors. The feature, however, was all Chris Marcum, who went the distance for the win. Tim Ladd came in second with Dan Tipton finishing third in his first appearance in the area this season. Andy Williams and Chuck Freels rounded out the top five as Caleb Marcum and Travis Page rounded out the field.
The Super Street class had Skyler Douglas and Robbie Comer lead the field to the green flag, but Comer would go flag to flag and withstand a protest by second place finisher Pete Wright to earn his first win of the season at Wartburg Speedway. Danny Bray, Dewayne Chandler, and Skylar Douglas rounded out the running order.
In the Thunder class, Bucky Nance and Jason Mount, by virtue of their heat wins, led the field to the green flag. Nance would dominate en route to victory as Matthew Lloyd finished second with Stephen Potter, Robert Russell, and Kevin Crane rounding out the top five. JJ Copeland, Jason Mount, and Daniel Daugherty closed out the field. Barry Wilson was unable to start the feature.
Spunky Brown used a three-wide move in turn two of the opening lap of the Front Wheel Drive race to jump into first and never looked back as Ryan Maston and Chris Morrison rounded out the field.
The Dwarf cars closed out the evening as Ricky Terry and Scott Martin led the field to green, as Terry led the first seven laps until an on-track skirmish with Wes Jones resulted in Terry losing tire pressure in his left front, handing the lead to Scott Martin for the next two circuits. Jones, however, was not to be denied on this night as he zoomed past Martin on lap ten and pulled away for the win. Martin had to settle for second place with Rick Davis, Ricky Terry, and Willard Lawson rounding out the running order.
Next Saturday night is another weekly points race at Wartburg Speedway before the big $2,500 to win Late Model race on July 3rd, complete with a fireworks show for the fans in attendance.
