Along with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals held on Saturday night at Smoky Mountain Speedway the track played host to the 604 Crate Late Model division. After turning in a dominating performance, it was Mack McCarter who would claim the victory in the class at the Maryville, TN track. The Gatlinburg, TN driver walked away with winner’s check valued at $1,500.
A total of 24 cars were signed in for competition.
Mack McCarter led qualifying for the 604 Late Models by turning a lap in 17.067 seconds around the 4/10 mile clay oval to beat out Trevor Sise, Rusty Ballenger, Eli Beets, Bradley Lewelling, Josh Henry, Jesse Lowe, Jake Teague, Greg Martin, and Ross White.
At the start of the 20-lap feature it was McCarter who took the early lead ahead of Sise, Ballenger, Beets and Lewelling just before a lap 1 caution for a spin at the rear of the field slowed the action.
On that restart, Tyler Price spun on the backstretch with other machines being collected in the aftermath.
When green flag racing resumed, McCarter began to pull away from the pack, leaving Sise to battle with Ballenger and Beets for position. Eventually, the race would settle into a rhythm with the front runners largely holding station over the course of the run.
McCarter’s biggest challenge proved to be slower traffic but he was able to negotiate that without incident and drove on the the victory.
