Live Updates from the Ultimate SLM race at Smoky Mountain(7-11-14)

We will be providing live updates from the Ultimate Super Late Models race as well as the support classes from the Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN for Saturday night, July 11, 2014. Tonight’s updates are being provided by Richard Allen( @RichardAllenIDR on Twitter).

Time:

Drivers meeting is set for 6:30 with cars to hit the track shortly thereafter.

Weather: 

Weather forecast calls for a daytime high of 90 degrees with virtually no chance for rain.

General Information:

Dennis ‘Rambo’ Franklin currently leads the Ultimate SLM Series standings over Jeff Smith, Brandon Overton, Doug Sanders and Jonathan Edwards.

This will be the third time this season for Crate Late Models at SMS. Jimmy Elliott(March 8) and Jason Welshan(May 3) won the two previous events for that class.

This will be the second time in which Sportsman have raced at SMS in 2014. Heath Alvey won the only other event back on March 8.

This will be the second time in which Mini Stocks have raced at SMS this season. Michael Courtney won the only other event on May 3.

9:00- B-main 1 lining up. Top-6 transfer.

B-main 1 Results: 1. Arp, 2. Payne, 3. Burroughs, 4. Yoder, 5. Edwards, 6. Giffin.

Jeff Smith will get one of the Ultimate provisionals.

9:15- B-main 2 lininig up. The top-6 will transfer to the feature.

B-main 2 Results: 1. Kerr, 2. Ridley, 3. Vineyard, 4. Carver, 5. Douglas, 6. Sanders.

Boles and Hall were eliminated in a wreck that started when Vineyard and Carver got into a bumping match.

10:00- Feature lining up now.

10:05- Four wide!

10:08- Green flag!

Caution on initial start when Burroughs spun and collected Yoder and Edwards. Payne also suffered minor damage. Complete restart upcoming.

Lap 5 caution for crash by Yoder. Weaver had built up a lead of almost a full straight over Welshan, Hill, Franklin, Ferguson, Roberts and Compton.

Lap 8 caution for spin by Hedgecock. Weaver still dominated. On previous restart, Roberts made a three wide move to get around Ferguson and Franklin to claim 4th.

Huge pileup on the lap 8 restart when Roberts and Hill made contact racing for 3rd. Hill slowed and weaved suddenly causing about half the field to pile in and block the backstretch.

Ferguson has lost a drive shaft(not sure if related to accident). Chad Ogle was damaged as well as Ridley, Kerr and Payne.

Lap 17 caution for Sanders brushing turn two wall. Weaver continues to lead over Welshan, Hill, Roberts. Franklin and Arp having great battle for 5th.

Halfway- Weaver continues to lead over Welshan.

Lap 31 caution. Smith slowed on track. Just prior to that, Welshan fell out of 2nd and pulled off track. Weaver leads Hill, Roberts, Arp, Franklin, B Ogle, Kerr.

Lap 33 caution for Arp coming to a stop on track.

Lap 37 caution for crash on backstretch involving Giffin and Collins. Appears as if Collins had lost a drive shaft. Roberts now 2nd after getting around Hill on lap 34.

Feature finish: 1. Randy Weaver, 2. Roberts, 3. Hill, 4. B Ogle, 5. Franklin, 6. Kerr.

Weaver never bobbled all night. There was some good racing behind him, especially on the restarts.

Weaver was in his new Longhorn. This was the car’s third outing. It was his first Ultimate win.

Two separate major pileups, one in turn one and the other on the back stretch. The top-8 cars or so were not involved but virtually everyone else was.

Lap 6 caution for Wyatt stopped on track. Welshan had a commanding lead over Williams, Martin, Beeler.
