Along with the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals, the Volunteer Speedway also staged racing in the 604 Crate Late Model division on Monday night. Josh Henry came away with the feature win after leading the event from flag-to-flag. The Newport, TN racers earned $800 for his victory.
Josh Henry set fast time in qualifying by posting a lap of 14.179 seconds around the 4/10 mile clay oval to beat out Rusty Ballenger, Jordon Horton, Drew Kennedy, Adam Ahl, Nathan Martin, Shannon Emery, Troy Eads, Tim Sant, Jacob Owens, Josh Baker, Bradley Strong and Michael Smith.
At the start 20-lap feature it was Henry who grabbed the early lead with Ballenger, Horton and Kennedy trailing in his wake. A caution just after the completion of the first lap for a spin by Emery that collected Strong and Smith other cars briefly slowed the pace.
When green flag conditions returned to the track, Kennedy was able to move by Ballenger to take second as Henry set about the business of pulling away from the pack. Later, Ballenger would find himself in another fight for position as Horton moved in to challenge at lap 5.
By lap 7 Horton’s advances proved successful as he was able to get around Ballenger to assume the third spot.
Henry encountered slower traffic in the race’s second half but was able to maintain his advantage throughout. On the final lap Kennedy’s machine slowed, costing him the second position but there would be no challenge for Henry as he cruised under the checkered flag to earn the victory.
