Along with the Southern Nationals Bonus Series race held at Boyd’s Speedway on Saturday night, the track staged action in other classes. Jeff Smith emerged as the winner in the Crate Late Model feature race to take the $1,500 first prize from the track located in Ringgold, GA.
Smith set the pace early when he grabbed the pole for the feature by posting a lap of 14.986 seconds around the third-mile oval during time-trials. Joining Smith in the top-10 on the starting grid was Cory Hedgecock, Cruz Skinner, Jason Welshan, Tom Maddox, Chip Brindle, Kevin Stewart, Ahnna Parkhurst, Eddie King, Jr. and Will Roland.
Smith immediately went to the lead in the 30-lap feature with Hedgecock and Welshan in tow. The battle was quickly joined by Skinner, Brindle and Maddox for positions at the back of the top-5. King began to move forward from his ninth starting spot to challenge the front runners.
After a lap 13 caution, action picked up as the damaged car of Welshan looked to suffer handling woes which allowed the cars of Skinner, King and Maddox to move by.
Smith pulled away from the pack during the middle stages of the feature but Hedgecock closed right to his rear spoiler as the laps wound down. As the combatants took the white flag, Hedgecock apeared poised to make a move but Smith was able to hold him off in the final set of corners to win the race to the checkered flag.
