Along with the Ultimate Super Late Models, the North Georgia Speedway hosted events for all of its regular classes on Saturday night. The Chatsworth, Georgia facility staged races for the Crate Late Models, Sportsman, A-Hobby, B-Hobby and Pony divisions on the third-mile layout.
It’s not exactly breaking news to report that Jason Welshan has won a Crate Late Model feature race. And indeed, that is exactly what happened on Saturday night as the Maryville, Tenn. driver recorded yet another victory in the class he so often dominates around this region.
Welshan and Jimmy Elliott won the two heat races used to set the starting lineup for the feature thus establishing an all east Tennessee front row for the CLM main event.
At the start of the 25-lap affair, Welshan went to the early lead with Kenny Kizzar, Elliott and Jason Deal following in his tire tracks. However, a six car pileup at mid-pack in turn two slowed the action on the second lap.
In all, there would be four yellow flags in the race, but no one was able to mount a serious challenge to Welshan over the full distance.
But just because the leader of the race was dominant doesn’t mean there wasn’t good racing. Throughout the field, cars swapped positions during the night on the track that allowed for both high and low groove racing.
In particular, Deal and Elliott battled for the third spot behind Welshan and Kizzar throughout much of the race while Drew Deaver, Booger Brooks and Larry Higgins exchanged positions within the top-5 on multiple occasions.
Deal would move away from his contest with Elliott and go on to make a last lap pass of Kizzar to claim the runner-up spot.
In the end, Welshan drove to the win ahead of Deal, Kizzar, Deaver and Elliott.
