Feature Re-cap: The 35-lap feature began with Zearfoss spinning to bring out an immediate yellow before a lap had been completed. When the race did go green, Macedo took the lead ahead of Gravel, Schatz, Haudenschild and Scelzi. Wasting no time, Schatz grabbed the runner-up spot away from Gravel on the second lap.
In the early going, a three-wide fight broke out between Schatz, Gravel and Haudenschild ensued with Schatz emerging with the spot. The 10-time series champion then moved in and began to harass Macedo for the lead.
A lap 6 caution for Wimmer slowed the action briefly. On the restart, Gravel took third from Haudenschild and then moved in to wrest second from Schatz as those two battled behind Macedo. At the same time, Kofoid made his presence felt when he broke into the top-5 on lap 12.
Lap 15 saw Schatz again take second from Gravel. One lap later, Schatz got by Macedo for the top spot. That battle went on for multiple laps with Schatz running the bottom and Macedo on the top until Macedo reassumed command on lap 24.
Schatz and Gravel closed on Macedo with five laps remaining. Gravel took second from Schatz on lap 31 but was not able to capture the race lead.
In the end, it was Macedo who would score his second series win of 2023.
“I felt like in so many stages of the race, I didn’t really know where to be,” Macedo stated in his post-race interview with DirtVision. “I felt like Donny was making such good speed down on the bottom but the couple of times I moved down I felt like I was in no-man’s land down there. I thought that sticking to the top and whatever that gave me was going to be my result. I feel like the top, lucky for me, cleaned off really nice there with about 15 or 12 to go. I could feel myself grip back up and a lot of them lappers started running down in that dirty stuff and that helped me out a lot.”
