Brandon Overton makes late move to capture SoNats feature at Senoia

Brandon Overton scored his second win on the 2020 Southern Nationals tour

Following a day off from racing action, the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals returned to action on Thursday night at Senoia Raceway. A total of 35 cars signed for competition at the track known for its gumbo clay and in the end it was Brandon Overton who came away from the Senoia, GA with the victory in the fifth of what is scheduled to be a twelve-race schedule. The Evans, GA driver earned $3,500 for his victory in a race shown live by DirtonDirt.com.

The top-4 from each qualifying group would be locked into the feature.

Brandon Overton was fastest in Group A qualifying with a lap of 12.684 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval beating out Tyler Millwood, Ross Bailes, Payton Freeman and Jake Knowles.

Overton’s lap established a new track record for Senoia raceway.

Chris Madden led the way in Group B time-trials topping with a time of 13.118 seconds topping Mark Whitener, Jason Croft, Cory Hedgecock and Michael Page.

Steven Roberts won the first heat of the evening ahead of Jake Knowles and Ryan Crane while Pearson Lee Williams took the second heat over Donald McIntosh and Matt Dooley.

Michael Page was the victor in the third heat as he beat out Joseph Joiner and Austin Horton just before

At the start of the 35-lap feature it was Madden who would take the early lead over Overton, Whitener, Millwood and Bailes. A caution flag waved after the completion of the first lap when Williams and McIntosh were involved in an incident.

On the ensuing restart Whitener got around Overton to capture second just before another yellow flag was displayed to the field for an incident involving Knowles. Overton regained the runner-up position on the restart.

Madden and Overton began to separate from the pack until another caution slowed the action again on lap 8. The exchange of second by Overton and Whitener continued on the restart as Whitener again moved into that position.

Overton moved by Whitener another time for second on lap 13. Overton then began to close on Madden for the race lead before the lightning fast track claimed another victim in Crane to bring out a caution on lap 16.

Madden worked to pull away on lap 20 but Overton began to fight back as the race leader encountered slower traffic. Further back, Bailes and Whitener scraped over the third position before Bailes slowed to bring out a caution on lap 27.

On the lap 27 restart Roberts came up to third as Whitener bobbled in turn one. But the key fight for position was up front as Overton closed in on Madden. Overton made his move to grab the top spot with an inside move in turn three.

From that point, Overton pulled away to take his second checkered flag of the 2020 Southern Nationals Series.
