Brandon Overton earns another big payday in Cochran’s Gobbler

Brandon Overton earned $21,000 at Cochran

The Cochran Motor Speedway played host to its 4th annual Gobbler event on Friday and Saturday night with an unsanctioned Super Late Model feature serving as the main attraction. Qualifying and heat racing action were completed on Friday night with the main event taking place on Saturday evening. After the dust had settled, it was Brandon Overton who scored the win in a race shown live by FloRacing.com. The Longhorn Chassis driver from Evans, Georgia earned $21,000 for the triumph.

A total of 14 cars were signed in for competition.

Austin Kirkpatrick was fastest in qualifying after he turned a lap in 14.643 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval besting Brandon Overton, Garrett Smith, Pearson Lee Williams, Mark Whitener and Scott Bloomquist.

Austin Kirkpatrick won the first heat race ahead of Garrett Smith, Mark Whitener, Wil Herrington, Colton Flinner and Blake Spencer.

Brandon Overton took the second preliminary over Scott Bloomquist, Pearson Lee Williams, Dalton Cook, Jimmy Sharpe Jr. and Craig Scott.

Just before the start of the feature, Herrington would retire his machine with mechanical issues.

At the start of the 50-lap main event it was Kirkpatrick who grabbed the early lead with Overton, Bloomquist, Whitener and Williams in his tire tracks. By lap 5, Overton closed in and began to apply pressure on Kirkpatrick for the race lead as the top-5 cars ran in single-file formation.

Overton then closed in again on Kirkpatrick on lap 9. The driver who has won numerous high-paying races in 2021 went to the high side of the track and passed by Kirkpatrick to grab the lead.

Further back, Whitener pulled up on Bloomquist to contest the third spot. On lap 12, Whitener seized third from Bloomquist and set off after Kirkpatrick.

Whitener and Kirkpatrick engaged in a slide job swapping fight for second on lap 15. Whitener eventually would emerge from that battle with the position as he then set off after Overton. Briefly, the No. 58 was able to close the gap on the race leader but Overton would ultimately pull away to a considerable advantage.

Second-running Whitener slowed on the track with just three laps remaining to bring out a yellow flag. Overton would not be challenged over the closing laps as he steered his machine to another big payday.
