The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series sanctioned the second of a three-race week at East Bay Raceway Park on Tuesday night. At the end of the evening, it was Brandon Overton who took the $7,000 payout away from the ‘Clay by the Bay’ in Tampa, Fla. for winning his first Lucas Oil feature of the season.
Brandon Overton led the way in Group A qualifying with a lap of 14.546 seconds around the third-mile clay oval to beat out Rick Eckert, Shane Clanton, Devin Moran Shanon Buckingham and Tyler Erb.
Jimmy Owens was fastest in Group B qualifying and overall with a time of 14.495 seconds to top Tim McCreadie, Jeff Mathews, Tanner English, Tyler Bruening and Billy Moyer, Jr.
Brandon Overton took the win in the first heat race of the night ahead of Shane Clanton, Shanon Buckingham and Josh Richards while Jonathan Davenport outran Rick Eckert,Tyler Erb and Devin Moran in the second preliminary.
Jimmy Owens was the victor in the third heat over Tyler Bruening, Steven Roberts and Jeff Mathews just before Tim McCreadie was best in the fourth heat by beating out Tanner English, Blake Spencer and Billy Moyer, Jr.
Brian Shirley and Kyle Bronson won the two B-main races used to set the remainder of the starting lineup for the main event.
At the start of the 40-lap feature Overton jetted to the lead with Owens, Davenport, McCreadie and Clanton following. The top-5 quickly got into single-file formation and began logging laps.
However, on lap 8 the baatle was joined as Davenport, McCreadie and Clanton began to mix it up for positions 3-5 until a lap 12 caution slowed the pace.
On the lap 12 restart, Davenport took to the high side of the track and bolted all the way to the lead just before a second yellow flag was displayed to the field on lap 13.
Overton would regain the lead of the race on lap 15 as he passed by Davenport on the high side of the track. At the same time, Owens closed in on Davenport to challenge for the runner-up spot. Further back, Clanton and McCreadie fought for the fourth position as the race hit the halfway mark.
On lap 24, Owens fell back into the clutches of McCreadie and Clanton as that trio battled for positions 3-5.
Overton controlled the race throughout the second half while furious battles raged behind him. Davenport and Owens fought over the second spot while Bronson, McCreadie and Richards disputed positions 5-7.
But in the end it was all Brandon Overton for the victory.
