Brandon Overton looked like a potential winner on Tuesday night at Volusia Speedway Park until misfortune struck. The No. 76 car returned on Wednesday night to set fast time and lead all the way in the first of a triple feature night in the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals.
The Longhorn Chassis driver from Evans, Georgia earned $5,000 for his efforts on the track located in Barberville, Florida in a race aired live by DirtVision.com.
A total of 18 cars were signed in for competition.
Qualifying Results: 1. Brandon Overton, 2. Max Blair, 3. Bobby Pierce, 4. Brandon Sheppard, 5. Ashton Winger, 6. Nick Hoffman, 7. Ryan Gustin, 8. Tanner English, 9. Brian Shirley, 10. Feature Re-cap: At the start of the 20-lap feature it was Overton who went to the front of the pack with Blair, Winger, Sheppard and Hoffman trailing but a spin involving Osterhoff brought out a yellow flag. When the race went back to green flag conditions Winger moved ahead of Blair while Hoffman and Pierce fought for fourth until a bobble by Pierce allowed both Hoffman and Shirley to get around.
Hoffman lost the handle on lap 5 permitting Shirley and Pierce to move into fourth and fifth. Overton built a big lead until he caught the tail of the field on lap 13. But he would be given a reprieve from slower traffic when a caution came out on lap 15 for the slowing car of Whitener.
Overton continued lead when the race restarted as Pierce jumped to the outside in an attempt to move forward. But over the closing laps it would be Overton who would sail under the checkered flag for the victory.
