This edition of the Quick Six offers some thoughts on the big month of racing in August.
1. I hope one of our East Tennessee tracks can build one of their events into a mega-event. Fans in this area deserve something like that without having to travel to Kentucky or Ohio to see such an event.
2. Volunteer Speedway’s Scorcher event has been an exciting event to cap off the summer of racing in this area. It’s a shame the race no longer pays $25k or more to win. But it’s hard to compete with free tickets at Bristol’s truck race in order for the Scorcher to be a two-day show to accommodate such a purse.
3. The crowd for the finale of the Southern Nationals at Tazewell Speedway was impressive, even though none of the so-called big name drivers weren’t there that typically bring in these types of crowds.
4. This year’s edition of the Southern Nationals was very competitive. I still wonder if the Spring Nationals and the Bonus Series takes away a little from the Southern Nationals considering car counts and attendance was down at some venues this year.
5. With six scheduled races in east Tennessee this year, the Carolina Clash should consider a name change.
6. The Topless 100 is one of the most unique events of the “crown jewels” for dirt late models. Considering the speeds cars run these days and the number of flips and rollovers, one wonders if safety will eventually trump tradition for this event.
