There was plenty of racing at the 411 Motor Speedway on Saturday night and the Limited
Late Model class was responsible for a part of that action. The Steelheads no longer run on a weekly basis at the Mitch and Tanya McCarter owned facility but a total of 10 cars signed in for competition nonetheless.
Last week’s winner in the class, Jason Welshan, looked to make himself the man to beat once again when he set the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 13.968 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval. He was followed by Jason Cardwell, Greg Martin, Brad Lowe and Mack McCarter in the top-5 of the starting grid for this feature race.
At the start of the 25-lap main event, Cardwell bolted from the outside of the front row to grab the early lead with Welshan hounding him immediately.
A lap 4 caution set the stage for the race’s pivotal moment. With the Delaware double-file restart being employed by the track, Cardwell re-fired out front alone while Welshan and Lowe lined up side-by-side just behind him. When the green flag waved, Lowe used the high line to make his move. He first cleared Welshan then was able to pass by Cardwell as well and assert himself as the new leader.
From that point, Lowe would draw away to a relatively comfortable lead as Cardwell fought to hold off Welshan, McCarter and Jason Manley. On lap 12, Welshan was able to move into the runner-up position and set off in pursuit of Lowe.
As the race wound down, Welshan began to drastically cut into Lowe’s advantage. But the laps would ultimately click away and Lowe would hold on for the win ahead of Welshan, Cardwell, McCarter, Manley and Matt Henderson.
