Weekly Racing Heroes will be a regular feature on InsideDirtRacing.com throughout the 2019 racing season. These pieces will focus on drivers in east Tennessee who race on a weekly basis at the tracks of this region. Here, drivers will answer three questions that will provide fans with a look into the lives of their favorite weekly competitors.
Driver: Clyde Stanton
Hometown: Knoxville, TN
Class: Sportsman Late Model
Clyde Stanton loves being in racing and he loves the relationships he has built because of the sport. The 54-year-old driver has been a contender for wins on the tracks in east Tennessee for four decades.
What got you started in racing?
“When I was 17 I went home one day with a guy I played basketball with and his dad was opening up Ashway Speedway. I drove a go-kart and now here I am. I’ve raced ever since. I traded a bunch of my go-kart stuff to Buster Cardwell for a Late Model to get Jason Cardwell started.”
What is the goal you want to achieve in racing?
“At my age I just like to compete in a division I can compete in. I had dreams of going big time but I’m happy where I’m at now and with the success I’m having. I’m having fun at it.”
What keeps you coming back week after week?
“I love racing. That’s it. I’ve got friends and I help people and people help me. You build a lot of friendships through racing.”
