The news of another race track closing has hit the dirt racing world. On Thursday morning it was announced via the track’s website that the Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, GA would be shut down. Track owners Paul and Debra Purvis broke the news to fans of the 3/10 mile clay oval facility and offered thanks to those who have assisted in the running of the track over the past 19 years.
Here is the text of the website post:
“Track owners Paul & Debra Purvis would like to thank the City of Swainsboro and Emanuel County for the support shown over the last 19 years. Swainsboro Raceway & Kart Track has the best Faculty & Staff in the United States and we appreciate your weekly dedication. We appreciate all of our sponsors for their support. Finally, the fans, drivers & their families that have made the weekly racing entertainment capable for all of us, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. After years of devotion, our family has decided to close Swainsboro Raceway. Thank you to everyone for your support. God Bless you & your families! Please get out and support your local Dirt Tracks”
Swainsboro Raceway originally opened in 1964 and was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Purvis in 2000. The track was scheduled to host racing for the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals on July 19th and the Schaeffer’s Oil Fall Nationals on October 19th as well as a full slate of weekly racing. The track has also played host to the annual $20,000-to-win Turkey 100 for Crate Late Model cars each fall.
