Weekly Racing Heroes will be a regular feature on InsideDirtRacing.com throughout the 2019 racing season. These pieces will focus on drivers in east Tennessee who race on a weekly basis at the tracks of this region. Here, drivers will answer three questions that will provide fans with a look into the lives of their favorite weekly competitors.
Driver: Grant Corum
Hometown: Seymour, Tenn.
Class: Sportsman Late Model
Grant Corum races primarily at 411 Motor Speedway. The 20-year-old driver has been involved in dirt racing a relatively short period of time. The 2017 graduate of Seymour High School hopes to continue his growth in the sport for years to come.
What got you started in racing?
“The year I graduated high school was my first year racing. We just decided to buy a race car and now here we are. I went to two or three Lucas Oil races and that was it. I didn’t really know any of those guys until I got into it but all those guys have been a great help.”
What is the goal you want to achieve in racing?
“I would just like to be competitive at these weekly shows every weekend and maybe travel a little bit and still be a competitive car everywhere we go. I guess we’ll just see how far we go. It definitely ain’t cheap and you’ve got to put in a lot of work on the car. You go to a job and then you come home to another job. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life but maybe sometime we’ll get it.”
What keeps you coming back week after week?
“I can’t even describe the feeling of racing. It’s crazy. I’d lose everything to keep on racing. The competition and the speed, there’s just nothing like it. Being here, everybody’s great. It’s a whole new family when you get to the track.”
