The Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Bonus Series was scheduled to contest its last race of the 2018 campaign on Saturday at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA. However, a week-long drenching of the grounds of the track located just south of Chattanooga forced series and track officials to cancel that event.
As a result of the cancellation, David Payne secured the championship for the Southern National Bonus Series. The Murphy, NC driver would have entered the race with an insurmountable lead in the standings as it was but the rain out simply assured that competing would not be necessary.
During the season, the “Coach” scored one series win in the Buddy Rogers Memorial on Labor Day weekend at the Tazewell(TN) Speedway. The racing teacher posted nine top-10 finishes in the 14 races completed by the series during this rain plagued year.
Chicky Barton, Joey Standridge, Aaron Ridley, and Casey Roberts rounded out the top-5 in the final standings.
Payne will collect $5,053 as the series champion.
