The 411 Motor Speedway hosted the 1st annual Leftover event on Saturday evening with a $5,000-to-win Super Late Model race serving as the post-Thanksgiving headliner along with racing in the Crate Late Model, Sportsman and Open Wheel Modified classes as well. Perennial east Tennessee front runner Jason Welshan ultimately raced his way to the front of the pack and claimed the $2,000 first prize in the Crate Late Model feature race on the Seymour, Tenn. track.
For Welshan, the win was particularly significant after having gone through a season in which he actually spent several weeks out of the driver’s seat to allow himself and his team to regroup after a disappointing beginning to the 2016 campaign.
Greg Martin led the way in qualifying for this class when he posted a lap of 15.145 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval. Joining the pole winner in earning a guaranteed starting spot for the feature were Jim Couch, Welshan, Donald McIntosh, Jason Manley, Ryan King, Ross White, Jason Trammell, Steven Holcomb and Logan Roberson.
Matt Henderson, Lamar Scoggins and Remington Gill won the three B-main races used to set the remainder of the starting grid for the main event.
Martin took the early lead in what proved to be a caution plagued first half of the 35-lap affair. Welshan, White, Manley and McIntosh chased the front runner initially until the yellow flags began to wave. The most significant of the early cautions came just after a lap 1 restart when outside front row starter Couch got sideways on the exit of turn 2 and eventually collected several potential contenders.
King, Scoggins, White, Trammell and Philip Thompson were among those who suffered at least some degree of damage in the incident. Trammell and Scoggins were eventually forced to retire from the event due to the damage.
Martin’s lead proved to be short-lived as his No. 24 machine slipped high in turn 2 on the fourth lap of the race allowing Welshan to power by on the inside. The diver known as ‘Skinny’ would suffer the same fate three laps later as his car again faded high causing him to surrender the runner-up spot to Manley.
Just behind the lead trio, McIntosh battled White for the fourth position, which he eventually captured on the ninth circuit. McIntosh, the winner of multiple Super Late Model races at 411, then went on to take third away from the ill handling Martin on the ninth lap.
After the race’s final caution on lap 22, Welshan pulled away from the field and drove on to the win.
