Wartburg Speedway gearing up for big Labor Day weekend and beyond

Wartburg General Manager Raymond Shepard says the crowds have been good at Wartburg this year.

Track General Manager Raymond Shepard says the crowds have been good at Wartburg this year.

Raymond Shepard took over the management of Wartburg Speedway at the beginning of the 2014 season. So far, the veteran east Tennessee racer and race director believes things are going well at the Mike Kittrell owned quarter-mile facility. And soon, the track will be gearing up for one of its biggest events of the season.

“I think it’s gone pretty good,” Shepard said of the season to date. “There has been a lot of good racing all year and we’ve had a lot of different winners. You never know who’s going to win each week in all the classes.”

And the community has responded to that great competition.

“The crowds have been good,” Shepard declared. “They’re good people up there supporting the track. I’ve really enjoyed working up there. We’ve had a ball, me and my whole family.”

On Sunday night, August 31st, Wartburg Speedway will host a special event that will reward drivers and fans for the good season the track has experienced.

“We’ll have a $2,000-to-win Limited Late Model race on that night and all of our divisions will race for good money,” Shepard explained.

And the track’s general manager wanted to emphasize that the racing will continue well into the fall season.

“We’re going to run to the end of October if everything goes well,” he stated. “We plan on having another big race on October 18th for the Limited Late Models and all our classes.”
