Quick Six: Random Thoughts

quick6

I try to make the Quick Six blog revolve around a particular theme. But for this addition, I am offering some random thought on a variety of topics from mid-week racing to up and down car counts.

1. Any racetrack running a mid-week program that runs the main event last is doing a disservice to its fans. Most fans have to go to work the next morning and they may think twice about going the next time a mid-week event is held.

2. As much has been made about the lack of success for Darrell Lanigan and Jimmy Owens this season, the Clint Bowyer team of Don O’Neal and Steve Francis has been struggling even more. Time will tell if the teams are just off with their cars or if something else is amiss.

3. It has been interesting to watch the ebb and flow of car counts with some of the divisions such as four cylinders and street stocks. One track will have a great car count in one or both those classes only to see the car count slide the next week or two, then pick up again.

4. Facebook and Twitter accounts for racetracks should only be used to promote the track’s events and offer updates, not for personal opinions or self-promotion by the individuals overseeing those accounts.

5. An interesting topic about tire testing came up on my message board earlier this week. It got me to thinking about how little we have heard about failed tire tests in the last couple of years. Are teams better at not getting caught? Are teams not doing it as much? Or is there another reason behind it?

6. Herman Goddard will be inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame on August 4. He is the first race car driver to be inducted. There are several others also deserving of that honor. Let’s hope people will continue to let the voting committee know about these great drivers of the past.
