As was the case in 2014, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will open its season at the Golden Isles Speedway in Waynesville, Georgia. And as was the case last season, GIS general manager Darryl Courson is looking forward to the arrival of the national touring series for the ‘Georgia Boot Super Bowl of Racing’ on February 5th-7th, 2015.

“Lucas Oil will be here to start their season,” Courson said in a recent interview with InsideDirtRacing.com. “They bring in a good group of cars and drivers and they have a really good fan base. We’re doing a Thursday, Friday and Saturday show. The Thursday race is the Edwin Coggins Memorial in honor of a gentleman that passed away here at the track last year.”

That opening race on Thursday is a non-points paying, $7,000-to-win event with sanctioning by the LOLMDS.

“The Friday and Saturday shows are $10,000-to-win each night and it looks like it’s building up to be a huge event,” Courson added. “I hope it’s going to be a big success and with Lucas Oil on tap, it’s bound to be good.”

Further, Courson believes spectators will be treated to more than just great competition. Being the first races of the season for the series that typically features such well known drivers as Jimmy Owens, Scott Bloomquist and Eddie Carrier, Jr. as well as Clint Bowyer Racing pilots Don O’Neal and Steve Francis will provide fans the opportunity to see the 2015 versions of their favorites drivers’ cars when they are at their very best.

“Everybody will have their new stuff and their new colors and paint schemes,” he insisted. “With Don O’Neal coming off a championship last year, he’ll be gunning for a first victory along with everybody else who’s going to be after him.”

The general manager of the facility located in the southeastern corner of Georgia says that his track’s relationship with the series and its personnel was key to the success of last years event, and has set the stage for even more success this year and beyond.

“Last year was huge,” Courson declared. “I believe it might have been the biggest one yet. It all turned out good and we have a good relationship with Lucas Oil, Ritchie Lewis, Rick Schwallie and that whole crew. I’m hoping everything goes good this year and we will hopefully be able to announce next year’s race and see what we can do to make it even better.”

Joining the LOLMDS on the 2015 schedule at GIS will be the Southern Thunder Late Model Series, a regional tour based in that area. Courson believes there could be 30 or more cars on hand for that division, which will pay $2,500-to-win on Friday and Saturday nights.

The STLMS has a rules package that allows for steelhead or aluminum engines as well as 604 crate power plants. Courson believes those rules will not only allow for exciting racing but also for greater driver participation. “I think there may be some surprise drivers to enter that event so that’s going to make it even better.”
